Jackson Merrill
Jackson Merrill Absent from Friday's lineup
Fri, Aug 22, 2025, 4:45 PM
Merrill (ankle) is not in the Padres' starting lineup against the Dodgers on Friday.
Analysis: Merrill will ride the bench for a fifth consecutive game while working through a left ankle contusion that he suffered this past Sunday against the Dodgers. It's not clear whether an IL stint is needed, but the lack of new lockers in the Padres' clubhouse doesn't suggest any player being called up from the minors anytime soon, so Merrill could be available to return at some point during this weekend's home series, per Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune. Ramon Laureano will start in center field and bat seventh.
Dylan Cease
Dylan Cease Punches out seven in shaky outing
Thu, Aug 21, 2025, 6:33 PM
Cease (6-11) earned the win Thursday against the Giants, allowing four runs on six hits and two walks in five innings. He struck out seven.
Analysis: Though the six hits were his most allowed since July 2 in Philadelphia, Cease produced 13 whiffs en route to fanning at least seven for the fourth time in his last five starts. The right-hander continues to offer fantasy managers plenty of strikeout upside, as he has 178 punchouts over 137.2 innings, but he's been unable to reach his top form consistently with a 4.71 ERA for the season. Cease will be aiming for better run prevention his next time out, which is slated for next week at pitcher-friendly T-Mobile Park against the Mariners.
Jackson Merrill
Jackson Merrill Missing fourth straight contest
Thu, Aug 21, 2025, 12:07 PM
Merrill (ankle) remains out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Giants.
Analysis: It's the fourth consecutive start Merrill has missed as he works his way through a bone bruise in his left ankle. Merrill undoubtedly will be aiming to return to action Friday for the start of a big series versus the rival Dodgers, but it doesn't seem to be a given that he'll be ready. Ramon Laureano will shift over to center field and Gavin Sheets will get a start in left field for the Padres on Thursday.
Manny Machado
Manny Machado Snaps homer drought Wednesday
Thu, Aug 21, 2025, 2:45 AM
Machado went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in an 8-1 win against the Giants on Sunday.
Analysis: Machado flashed his power with a 425-foot solo blast in the third inning. The long ball was his first since July 29 -- a span of 19 games. The veteran third baseman had only four RBI during that homerless span, and the Padres could really benefit if he's able to turn things around down the stretch. Despite the recent struggles, Machado still has a healthy 21 home runs and 74 RBI on the campaign, and his .837 OPS is on pace to be his best mark since 2022.
Ryan O'Hearn
Ryan O'Hearn Goes deep in win
Thu, Aug 21, 2025, 2:39 AM
O'Hearn went 2-for-3 with a home run, a walk, two total runs and two total RBI in an 8-1 victory versus San Francisco on Wednesday.
Analysis: O'Hearn kicked off the scoring with an RBI single in the first inning and added a solo shot to center field in the seventh. The former Oriole is working on a modest four-game hitting streak during which he's gone 6-for-13 at the plate with two homers, four runs and six RBI. O'Hearn has been a solid contributor since joining the Padres at the trade deadline, collecting three home runs, 10 RBI and seven runs over 16 contests while slashing .262/.372/.524.
Gavin Sheets
Gavin Sheets Goes deep twice in rare start
Thu, Aug 21, 2025, 2:35 AM
Sheets went 2-for-4 with a pair of home runs and four total RBI in an 8-1 win against the Giants on Wednesday.
Analysis: After San Diego acquired Ramon Laureano and Ryan O'Hearn at the trade deadline, Sheets saw his playing time drop dramatically -- he got a second straight start Wednesday, but prior to that, the veteran slugger had been out of the starting lineup for six straight games. Sheets certainly made the most of the opportunity against San Francisco, clubbing a solo blast in the second inning and a three-run homer in the third to help the Padres cruise to a big win. Laureano and O'Hearn have fared quite well since joining San Diego, so it's hard to see Sheets moving back into an everyday role when the team is healthy. However, he could have at least a short-term path to regular at-bats while Jackson Merrill is sidelined with a bone bruise in his left ankle.
JP Sears
JP Sears Cruises to win after call-up
Thu, Aug 21, 2025, 2:28 AM
Sears (8-10) earned the victory over San Francisco on Wednesday, allowing one run on four hits and one walk while striking out two batters over six innings.
Analysis: Sears struggled in his first start with San Diego on Aug. 4 and was subsequently optioned to the minors. The southpaw was called up Wednesday to face the Giants and showed vast improvement, logging a quality start while holding San Francisco to just one run. Sears wasn't exactly overpowering -- he notched just five whiffs and two strikeouts -- but he got the job done to help the Padres pick up a critical game in the NL West standings. With that said, Michael King (knee) may be able to return after a minimum-length stay on the IL, so it's unclear if Sears will stick in the rotation, move to the bullpen or eventually go back to Triple-A.
Jackson Merrill
Jackson Merrill Dealing with bone bruise
Wed, Aug 20, 2025, 7:45 PM
Padres manager Mike Shildt said Wednesday that Merrill (ankle) is dealing with some bone bruising, which can "take awhile to heal," Dennis Lin of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: San Diego continues to take things day by day with its star center fielder, but things might be coming to a head with a big series coming up against the Dodgers this weekend. A trip to the 10-day injured list could be needed. Ramon Laureano and Bryce Johnson have been patrolling center during Merrill's absence the last few days.
Xander Bogaerts
Xander Bogaerts Sitting Wednesday
Wed, Aug 20, 2025, 5:15 PM
Bogaerts is not in the Padres' starting lineup against the Giants on Wednesday.
Analysis: Bogaerts will get a rare day off Wednesday, with Jose Iglesias starting at shortstop and batting seventh. In 30 games since the All-Star break, Bogaerts has a .761 OPS with four steals, 19 runs, five home runs and 12 RBI over 129 plate appearances.
Jackson Merrill
Jackson Merrill Still out of lineup
Wed, Aug 20, 2025, 5:12 PM
Merrill (ankle) is not in the Padres' starting lineup against the Giants on Wednesday.
Analysis: Merrill will be out of the Padres' lineup for a third consecutive game while working through a left ankle injury that he has been dealing with since Friday. Gavin Sheets, Ramon Laureano and Fernando Tatis will start in the outfield from left to right in Merrill's absence.
Ron Marinaccio
Ron Marinaccio Retreats to Triple-A
Wed, Aug 20, 2025, 1:58 PM
The Padres optioned Marinaccio to Triple-A El Paso on Wednesday.
Analysis: Marinaccio's latest stint in the big leagues lasted less than a week, as he had been called up from El Paso on Saturday. He made a two-inning relief appearance later that day against the Dodgers but had gone unused out of the bullpen in the Padres' last three games. Marinaccio will give up his spot on the active roster to lefty JP Sears, who was recalled ahead of his scheduled start Wednesday versus the Giants.
JP Sears
JP Sears Called up ahead of start
Wed, Aug 20, 2025, 1:55 PM
The Padres recalled Sears from Triple-A El Paso ahead of his scheduled start Wednesday against the Giants at Petco Park.
Analysis: Sears was optioned to El Paso after getting tagged for five earned runs in five innings during his team debut Aug. 4 in Arizona following his acquisition at the trade deadline, but he'll get another look as the Padres' No. 5 starter. After Randy Vasquez struggled during a bulk-relief appearance last Friday versus the Dodgers before being sent back to El Paso, Sears will get the next chance to fill the vacancy in the rotation that was created earlier this month when Michael King (knee) landed on the injured list. King is hopeful for a minimum-length stay on the shelf, so Sears may not be guaranteed any starts beyond Wednesday.
JP Sears
JP Sears Rejoining big-league rotation
Tue, Aug 19, 2025, 5:48 PM
Manager Mike Shildt said Sears is up with the Padres as a member of the taxi squad and will be added to the active roster to start Wednesday's game against the Giants, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: The left-hander was demoted Aug. 8 after surrendering five earned runs over five innings during his debut with the Padres, and he'll return to the big leagues for another look Wednesday. Prior to that poor outing, Sears had a 4.95 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 97:29 K:BB across 111 innings this year.
Jake Cronenworth
Jake Cronenworth Rare lineup omission
Tue, Aug 19, 2025, 4:31 PM
Cronenworth is not in the Padres' lineup versus the Giants on Tuesday.
Analysis: Cronenworth has missed just one game in 2025 that he has been healthy for. The last game the second baseman did not start in was July 13, but he still came in off the bench for a plate appearance. With the left-handed bat on the bench Tuesday, Jose Iglesias has the start at second base and is batting eighth.
Freddy Fermin
Freddy Fermin Idle Tuesday
Tue, Aug 19, 2025, 4:22 PM
Fermin is not in the Padres' lineup versus the Giants on Tuesday.
Analysis: The Padres' new catcher is slashing .318/.348/.409 since joining the lineup Aug. 2. Since Fermin's last day off Aug. 13, he's gone 3-for-13 with three strikeouts in four games. As he takes a seat Tuesday, Elias Diaz has the start behind the plate and is batting ninth.
Jackson Merrill
Jackson Merrill Remains day-to-day Tuesday
Tue, Aug 19, 2025, 4:13 PM
Merrill (ankle) is not in the Padres' lineup versus the Giants on Tuesday.
Analysis: Merrill did not play in Monday's series opener against the Giants after departing Sunday's matchup against the Dodgers early due to a left ankle injury. However, he had been dealing the the injury since Friday. Gavin Sheets, Ramon Laureano and Fernando Tatis are the starting outfielders Tuesday as Merrill heals up on the bench.
Jackson Merrill
Jackson Merrill Not starting Monday
Mon, Aug 18, 2025, 4:51 PM
Merrill (ankle) is not in the Padres' starting lineup against the Giants on Monday.
Analysis: Merrill was forced to leave Sunday's game against the Dodgers after aggravating a left ankle injury that he suffered Friday. He's considered day-to-day for the time being, so he could return to the lineup at some point during the four-game series with San Francisco. Bryce Johnson will start at center field and bat ninth in Merrill's absence.
Luis Arraez
Luis Arraez Three hits, two steals in loss
Sun, Aug 17, 2025, 7:03 PM
Arraez went 3-for-5 with two doubles and two stolen bases in Sunday's 5-4 loss to the Dodgers.
Analysis: Arraez had been a little quiet at the plate recently, going just 2-for-19 over his previous five games. The pair of steals were his first thefts since July 21 versus the Marlins. Arraez is at a .291/.327/.399 slash line with six home runs, seven steals, 46 RBI, 52 runs scored, 26 doubles and four triples through 118 contests. He remains on pace to exceed 30 two-baggers for the fourth year in a row.

Jackson Merrill Dealing with ankle injury
Sun, Aug 17, 2025, 7:02 PM
Merrill (ankle) was removed from Sunday's 5-4 loss to the Dodgers in the bottom of the fourth inning, Bob Scanlan of Bally Sports San Diego reports.
Analysis: Merrill rolled his left ankle in Friday's loss to Los Angeles, which apparently got progressively worse over the weekend, per Dennis Lin of The Athletic. The outfielder said following Sunday's contest that "it's frustrating" and that "hopefully, I play tomorrow if I wake up, and it feels brand new, but I can't really say anything right now." Manager Mike Shildt classified Merrill as day-to-day for the time being, placing some doubt on his availability for Monday's series opener with the Giants.
Ramon Laureano
Ramon Laureano Homers again in loss
Sun, Aug 17, 2025, 7:00 PM
Laureano went 2-for-3 with a solo home run in Sunday's 5-4 loss to the Dodgers.
Analysis: Laureano contributed to the Padres' comeback effort with his fifth-inning homer off Tyler Glasnow. The outfielder has been steady for San Diego since coming over from Baltimore at the trade deadline, batting .339 with four homers and 12 RBI over 15 games with his new team. On the year, Laureano is at a strong .298/.364/.556 slash line with 19 long balls, 58 RBI, 56 runs scored and five stolen bases through 97 contests.
