Nestor Cortes Undergoes surgery
Thu, Oct 16, 2025, 9:11 PM
Cortes (biceps) underwent surgery to repair a tendon tear in his left arm Thursday and will be sidelined for 9-to-10 months, Francys Romero of BeisbolFR.com reports.
Analysis: Cortes landed on the injured list Sept. 5 with a biceps injury. He was ramping up for a potential return through the end of the month, though he apparently suffered a setback or was rediagnosed. Cortes will now be set to miss most of the 2026 season.
Adrian Morejon
Adrian Morejon Move into rotation not ruled out
Tue, Oct 14, 2025, 1:19 PM
Padres president of baseball operations A.J. Preller said Tuesday that the organization will have conversations soon about the possibility of moving Morejon into the starting rotation in 2026, 97.3 The Fan reports.
Analysis: Morejon boasts a 2.42 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 141:38 K:BB over 137.1 regular-season innings as a full-time reliever since the start of the 2024 campaign. He was often used as a starting pitcher earlier in his career, though, and the Padres could have a clear need in the rotation next season if Dylan Cease and Michael King depart in free agency. San Diego is also mulling shifting Mason Miller into the rotation.
Mason Miller
Mason Miller Role in 2026 undetermined
Tue, Oct 14, 2025, 1:14 PM
Padres president of baseball operations A.J. Preller said Tuesday that the team will discuss in the coming weeks whether Miller will remain in the bullpen or move into the starting rotation next season, 97.3 The Fan reports.
Analysis: Miller has been a full-time reliever the last two seasons and has been arguably the best bullpen arm in the game during that span, collecting a 2.56 ERA, 0.89 WHIP and 43.1 percent strikeout rate over 115 regular-season appearances. If the Padres elect to keep him in a relief role, he would likely take over as closer, as incumbent Robert Suarez is expected to exercise the opt-out clause in his contract and become a free agent. However, Miller has past experience as a starter and the club could try him in that role, particularly if it loses both Dylan Cease and Michael King in free agency.
Jose Iglesias
Jose Iglesias Suspended one game by MLB
Fri, Oct 10, 2025, 1:43 PM
Iglesias has been suspended one game by Major League Baseball for his actions following Game 3 of the National League Wild Card Series against the Cubs, Jesse Rogers of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Iglesias was among several Padres players to voice their displeasure to the umpire crew following their Game 3 loss, but he's the only one to receive a suspension. Much of the angst was over a strike three call on Xander Bogaerts, who received a fine for his actions. Barring a successful appeal, Iglesias will serve the suspension Opening Day next year. The 35-year-old is an impending free agent.
Jason Adam
Jason Adam Shifted to 60-day injured list
Wed, Oct 1, 2025, 8:10 AM
The Padres transferred Adam (quadriceps) from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day injured list Tuesday.
Analysis: The transaction frees up a spot on the 40-man roster for the addition of Martin Maldonado. Adam underwent season-ending surgery in early September to repair a ruptured left quadriceps tendon and is expected to require 6-to-9 months to recover.
Martin Maldonado
Martin Maldonado Contract selected
Tue, Sep 30, 2025, 10:59 AM
The Padres selected Maldonado's contract from the Arizona Complex League Padres on Tuesday.
Analysis: Maldonado is one of three catchers included on the team's wild-card roster, as he'll join Luis Campusano as a backup behind Freddy Fermin while Elias Diaz (oblique) recuperates. Fermin is expected to start every game during the series versus the Cubs, per Dennis Lin of The Athletic, so Maldonado is around merely as emergency depth.
Jose Iglesias
Jose Iglesias Absent from Game 1 lineup
Tue, Sep 30, 2025, 10:52 AM
Iglesias is not in the lineup Tuesday for Game 1 of the Wild Card Series versus the Cubs.
Analysis: Iglesias started the last two games of the regular season, but he'll retreat to the bench for the first game of the postseason. Jake Cronenworth will occupy second base against lefty Matthew Boyd and the Cubs.
Elias Diaz
Elias Diaz Held off wild-card roster
Tue, Sep 30, 2025, 10:29 AM
Diaz (oblique) is not on the Padres' wild-card roster.
Analysis: Diaz suffered a minor oblique strain during Saturday's game against the Diamondbacks and wasn't able to progress enough to be included on the team's wild-card roster. The Padres will carry three catchers, with Martin Maldonado and Luis Campusano behind starter Freddy Fermin.
Michael King
Michael King Left out of wild-card rotation
Mon, Sep 29, 2025, 2:20 PM
Padres manager Mike Shildt said Monday that King will be available out of the bullpen for the National League Wild Card Series against the Cubs, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: Nick Pivetta and Dylan Cease will start Games 1 and 2, respectively, and Yu Darvish is in line to take the ball in a potential Game 3. King was limited to only five starts from late May on due to shoulder and knee problems, and he posted a 6.11 ERA and 12:9 K:BB over 17.2 innings in those outings. The righty could be added back to the rotation if the Padres advance to the NLDS, but he'll be assigned to the bullpen for the wild-card round.
Elias Diaz
Elias Diaz Nursing oblique strain
Mon, Sep 29, 2025, 9:25 AM
Diaz's status for Tuesday's wild-card series opener versus the Cubs is in question due to a strained oblique, Dennis Lin of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Diaz tweaked his oblique during Saturday's 12-4 win over the Diamondbacks. The Padres don't believe the injury is serious, but Martin Maldonado and Luis Campusano will travel with the team to Chicago as insurance in case Diaz isn't included on the roster for the wild-card round. Diaz is the clear No. 2 catcher for the Padres behind Freddy Fermin, but he has served as the personal catcher this season for Nick Pivetta, who is slated to start Game 1 of the series.
Nick Pivetta
Nick Pivetta Starting Game 1
Sun, Sep 28, 2025, 6:28 PM
Pivetta will draw the start in Tuesday's Game 1 matchup with the Cubs in the wild-card round, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: Pivetta will take the mound as the Padres' postseason run begins Tuesday, earning the nod after posting a 2.87 ERA and 0.99 WHIP with 190 strikeouts over 181.2 innings in 31 starts this season. The right-hander has surrendered six runs on 11 hits and five walks, while striking out 10 batters over 10.1 innings in his last two outings. Pivetta previously matched up with the Cubs twice in April, combining to pitch nine innings, giving up four runs on 10 hits and four walks, while punching out 10.
Jackson Merrill
Jackson Merrill Productive in blowout win
Sun, Sep 28, 2025, 6:25 PM
Merrill went 2-for-3 with two doubles, two walks, three RBI and two runs scored in Sunday's 12-4 win over the Diamondbacks.
Analysis: Merrill posted eight multi-hit efforts over his last 20 games of the season, going 25-for-81 (.309) with seven homers, seven doubles, two triples and 16 RBI in that span. The outfielder had some rough stretches in the middle of the year, but he was good early and late and will look to carry his momentum in the playoffs. He wraps up the regular season with a .264/.317/.457 slash line, 16 home runs, 67 RBI, 59 runs scored, one stolen base, 25 doubles and six triples over 115 contests.
Manny Machado
Manny Machado Homers in Sunday's win
Sun, Sep 28, 2025, 6:20 PM
Machado went 2-for-2 with a solo home run, a second RBI and two total runs scored in Sunday's 12-4 win over the Diamondbacks.
Analysis: Machado was done after three innings with the Padres leading 6-2 at the time. That was likely to afford him some extra rest ahead of the playoffs. The third baseman went 14-for-46 (.304) with four homers and 11 RBI over his last 12 games of the regular season. Overall, he posted a .275/.335/.460 slash line with 27 homers, 95 RBI, 91 runs scored, 14 stolen bases and 33 doubles across 159 games, numbers largely in line with his performances in 2023 and 2024.
JP Sears
JP Sears Strong showing in start
Sun, Sep 28, 2025, 6:16 PM
Sears (9-11) allowed two runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out four over 5.2 innings to earn the win over the Diamondbacks on Sunday.
Analysis: Sears got a spot start in the regular-season finale to give the rest of the Padres' starters some rest ahead of the playoffs. This was one of his better performances since being acquired from the Athletics at the trade deadline -- he posted a 5.47 ERA over 24.2 innings in five outings following the trade. Overall, Sears closed the regular season at a 5.04 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 117:36 K:BB across 135.2 innings.
Kyle Hart
Kyle Hart Heads back to minors
Sun, Sep 28, 2025, 2:44 PM
The Padres optioned Hart to the rookie-level Arizona Complex League on Sunday.
Analysis: Hart will cede his spot on the 28-man active roster to lefty JP Sears, who was recalled from El Paso to start Sunday's regular-season finale versus the Diamondbacks. Over 20 appearances (six starts) for the Padres on the season, Hart went 3-3 with a 5.86 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 37:13 K:BB in 43 innings.
JP Sears
JP Sears Recalled ahead of start
Sun, Sep 28, 2025, 2:37 PM
The Padres recalled Sears from Triple-A El Paso ahead of his scheduled start Sunday versus the Diamondbacks in San Diego.
Analysis: San Diego optioned lefty Kyle Hart to the minors to clear room on the 28-man active roster for Sears. The southpaw isn't expected to be included on the Padres' postseason roster, as he was called up Sunday to afford the other members of the rotation some extra rest in advance of the wild-card series with the Cubs.
Xander Bogaerts
Xander Bogaerts Homers in win
Sun, Sep 28, 2025, 7:32 AM
Bogaerts went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run in Saturday's 5-1 win over the Diamondbacks.
Analysis: Bogaerts launched a 424-foot homer off Eduardo Rodriguez in the first inning, his first extra-base hit since coming off the injured list Tuesday. The veteran shortstop has hit safely in three of four games since rejoining the Padres, going 4-for-16 in that span. He's slashing .262/.328/.389 with 11 home runs, 51 RBI, 62 runs scored and 20 steals across 550 plate appearances and appears healthy as the club gears up for the postseason.
Fernando Tatis Jr.
Fernando Tatis Jr. Homers again in win
Sun, Sep 28, 2025, 7:22 AM
Tatis went 1-for-2 with a solo home run and a walk in Saturday's 5-1 win over the Diamondbacks.
Analysis: Tatis led off with his third homer in as many days to spark a three-run first inning for the Padres. The 26-year-old is closing the regular season on a strong note, hitting safely in nine of his last 10 games with four home runs, eight RBI, 13 runs scored and three stolen bases in that span. He's slashing .267/.367/.446 with 25 long balls, 71 RBI, 110 runs scored and 32 steals across 689 plate appearances.
Michael King
Michael King Abbreviated outing in no-decision
Sun, Sep 28, 2025, 7:12 AM
King did not factor into the decision in Saturday's 5-1 win over the Diamondbacks, allowing one hit and two walks with three strikeouts over 2.2 scoreless innings.
Analysis: King generated seven whiffs on 49 pitches in his final regular-season outing as the Padres gear up to face the Cubs in the wild-card round. The 30-year-old posted a 5.74 ERA over four starts since returning from the injured list Sept. 9, though much of that damage came in an eight-run blowup against the Mets three turns ago. He'll wrap up an injury-plagued season with a 3.44 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 76:26 K:BB over 73.1 innings, while his role for the postseason remains unsettled.
JP Sears
JP Sears Expected to be called up for start
Sat, Sep 27, 2025, 11:09 PM
Sears is expected to be called up from Triple-A El Paso and start Sunday's regular-season finale against Arizona, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Analysis: Sears will return to the major-league roster, drawing the start in Game 162 for San Diego. With the Padres already locked into a matchup versus Cubs in the wild-card round beginning Tuesday in Chicago, the team will rest their regular starters in the finale. Sears has posted a 5.12 ERA and 1.30 WHIP with 113 strikeouts over 130 innings in 26 starts with the Athletics and Padres in 2025.
